December 14, 2008 am    Peace, Joy, and Jesus is a Coming    II Peter 3:8-14

by Ron George Jr. at the Fayetteville Baptist Church

Scripture Text:  II Peter 3:8 But do not forget this one thing, dear friends: With the Lord a day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years are like a day. 9 The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. He is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.
10 But the day of the Lord will come like a thief. The heavens will disappear with a roar; the elements will be destroyed by fire, and the earth and everything in it will be laid bare.a
11 Since everything will be destroyed in this way, what kind of people ought you to be? You ought to live holy and godly lives 12 as you look forward to the day of God and speed its coming.b That day will bring about the destruction of the heavens by fire, and the elements will melt in the heat. 13 But in keeping with his promise we are looking forward to a new heaven and a new earth, the home of righteousness.
14 So then, dear friends, since you are looking forward to this, make every effort to be found spotless, blameless and at peace with him. 15 Bear in mind that our Lord’s patience means salvation, just as our dear brother Paul also wrote you with the wisdom that God gave him.

I.  Remember who God Is:

  1. He is not slow.  Time is not a factor.  He has all the time, because He has the world.

  1. He is patient.  His patience is motivated by his love.
  1. He wants everyone to come to repentance.  Come to the Lord today.

  1. He keeps His promises.  He will do what He says He will do.
  1. The Prince of Peace will come like a thief in the night.

II.  Remember His promises?  He always keeps His promises.

III.  Everything is in His hands.  He has the whole world.  He is the uncreated.

IV.  He will remake the earth.  A new heaven and a new earth where the righteous will live.  Peace and Joy and Jesus will come to the earth.  He will keep His promise.  He isn’t slow and forgetful, but when the time is right He will come again.
He calls us to remember that Peace is a coming our way.  Peace is coming to the earth because the Prince of peace is coming.  We look forward to the coming peace and make peace now with God through Jesus Christ.

V.  Since Peace and Joy and Jesus are coming:  What does this mean to us?
14 So then, dear friends, since you are looking forward to this, make every effort to be found spotless, blameless and at peace with him. 15 Bear in mind that our Lord’s patience means salvation, just as our dear brother Paul also wrote you with the wisdom that God gave him.

  1. This Christmas look forward to the coming again.

  1. This Christmas let’s live like He is coming again.
  1. This Christmas make every effort to be at peace with Him and with others.

  1. This Christmas remember we are saved and look forward to the coming of Peace, Joy, and Jesus.
