November 23, 2008am  Generations of Appreciation    Psalm 100

by Ron George Jr. at the Fayetteville Baptist Church

Psalm 100 1 Shout for joy to the Lord, all the earth. 2 Worship the Lord with gladness; come before him with joyful songs. 3 Know that the Lord is God. It is he who made us, and we are hisa; we are his people, the sheep of his pasture. 4 Enter his gates with thanksgiving and his courts with praise; give thanks to him and praise his name. 5 For the Lord is good and his love endures forever; his faithfulness continues through all generations.

1. A Day to Give Thanks unto God:  Why?

I.  I am thankful for the Day that I recognized that there is a living and true God.  Only one , the one and only, who is for ever..Do you believe that there is a Living God who is truly God of all the Universe.? What do your actions say and what do your lips say? Do they say the same thing?
I   We have been the recipients of the choicest bounties of heaven.  We have been preserved, the many years, in peace and prosperity.  We have grown in numbers, wealth and power, as no other nation has ever grown. But we have forgotten God.  We have forgotten the gracious hand which preserved us in peace and multiplied and enriched and strengthened us; and we have vainly imagined, in the deceitfulness of our hearts that all these blessings were produced by some superior wisdom and virtue of our own.
Intoxicated with unbroken success, we have become too self- sufficient to feel the necessity of redeeming and preserving grace, too proud to pray to God that made us!  It behooves us, then to humble ourselves before the offended Power, to confess our national sins, and to pray for clemency and forgiveness.
-- April 30, 1863, President Abraham Lincoln's Proclamation for a National Day of Fasting, Humiliation and Prayer

II.  I am Thankful for the Day that the Lord Made me!  I am thankful to be.   To be or not to be .. That is the question??  Are you thankful to be?  You are valuable to the Lord for you are his handiwork...We have not  and cannot make ourselves.  He has made us.
1The 5:18 (KJS) In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you. Ephe 5:20 (KJS) Giving thanks always for all things unto God and the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ;

III.  I am Thankful for the Day that the Lord made me to be an American..  we have been born into a country that was built on the principles of God given through the Bible..
Governor Bradford of Massachusetts made this first Thanksgiving Proclamation three years after the Pilgrims settled at Plymouth:
"Inasmuch as the great Father has given us this year an abundant harvest of Indian corn, wheat, peas, beans, squashes, and garden vegetables, and has made the forests to abound with game and the sea with fish and clams, and inasmuch as He has protected us from the ravages of the savages, has spared us from pestilence and disease, has granted us freedom to worship God according to the dictates of our own conscience. Now I, your magistrate, do proclaim that all ye Pilgrims, with your wives and ye little ones, do gather at ye meeting house, on ye hill, between the hours of 9 and 12 in the day time, on Thursday, November 29th, of the year of our Lord one thousand six hundred and twenty three and the third year since ye Pilgrims landed on ye Pilgrim Rock, there to listen to ye pastor and render thanksgiving to ye Almighty God for all His blessings."  -- William Bradford

A prominent American who was visiting Argentina was asked by the president of the republic, "Why has South America gotten on so poorly and North America so well; What do you think is the reason?"  The visitor replied, "I think the reason is found in the fact that the Spaniards came to South America seeking gold, while the Pilgrim Fathers came to North America seeking God."

IV.   I am Thankful for the Day that the Lord made me one of his people..this was the day that the Lord saved me and brought me into his family..  John 1:12 (KJS) But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, [even] to them that believe on his name: {power: or, the right, or, privilege}  1Pet 2:9 (KJS) But ye [are] a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light: {peculiar: or, purchased} {praises: or, virtues} 10 Which in time past [were] not a people, but [are] now the people of God: which had not obtained mercy, but now have obtained mercy.

V.   I am thankful for the Day that the Lord, the Shepherd, laid down his life for the Sheep. I am thankful that He is the Good Shepherd..This is the truth to all generations and his mercy is everlasting ....
John 10:11 (KJS) I am the good shepherd: the good shepherd giveth his life for the sheep.  We are the sheep in his fold and He loves us.
Psal 95:1 (KJS) O come, let us sing unto the LORD: let us make a joyful noise to the rock of our salvation. 2 Let us come before his presence with thanksgiving, and make a joyful noise unto him with psalms. {come...: Heb. prevent his face} 3 For the LORD [is] a great God, and a great King above all gods. 4 In his hand [are] the deep places of the earth: the strength of the hills [is] his also. {In...: Heb. In whose} {the strength...: or, the heights of the hills are his} 5 The sea [is] his, and he made it: and his hands formed the dry [land]. {The sea...: Heb. Whose the sea is} 6 O come, let us worship and bow down: let us kneel before the LORD our maker.

Ezra 3:11 With praise and thanksgiving they sang to the LORD:
"He is good; his love to Israel endures forever." And all the people gave a great shout of praise to the LORD, because the foundation of the house of the LORD was laid.

I am thankful because He is good.

Psalms 95:2  Let us come before him with  thanksgiving   and extol him with music and song.  3  For the LORD is the great God,  the great King above all gods.  4  In his hand are the depths of the earth,  and the mountain peaks belong to him.  5  The sea is his, for he made it,  and his hands formed the dry land.  6  Come, let us bow down in worship, let us kneel before the LORD our Maker;  7  for he is our God  and we are the people of his pasture,  the flock under his care.  Today, if you hear his voice.

I am thankful because He is the great God, the great King above all gods.
I am thankful because He is our maker.

Psalm 100:4 Enter his gates with thanksgiving and his courts with praise;
give thanks to him and praise his name.    5  For the LORD is good and his love endures forever;  his faithfulness continues through all generations.

I am thankful because His love endures forever and His faithfulness continues through all generations.

Psalm 147:7  Sing to the LORD with thanksgiving; make music to our God on the harp. 8 He covers the sky with clouds; he supplies the earth with rain and makes grass grow on the hills. 9 He provides food for the cattle and for the young ravens when they call. 10 His pleasure is not in the strength of the horse, nor his delight in the legs of a man; 11 the LORD delights in those who fear him, who put their hope in his unfailing love. 12 Extol the LORD, O Jerusalem; praise your God, O Zion,

I am thankful because the Lord provides for all, big and small.

Psalm 69:30  I will praise God's name in song and glorify him with thanksgiving.
31 This will please the LORD more than an ox, more than a bull with its horns and hoofs. 32 The poor will see and be glad-- you who seek God, may your hearts live!
33 The LORD hears the needy and does not despise his captive people. 34 Let heaven and earth praise him, the seas and all that move in them, 35 for God will save Zion
and rebuild the cities of Judah. Then people will settle there and possess it; 36 the children of his servants will inherit it, and those who love his name will dwell there.

I am thankful because the Lord loves the lost, the lonely, and the least.

Isaiah 51:3 The LORD will surely comfort Zion and will look with compassion on all her ruins; he will make her deserts like Eden, her wastelands like the garden of the LORD. Joy and gladness will be found in her, thanksgiving and the sound of singing.

I am thankful because the Lord will comfort and renew.

Jeremiah 30:19 From them will come songs of thanksgiving and the sound of rejoicing.
I will add to their numbers, and they will not be decreased; I will bring them honor, and they will not be disdained.

I am thankful because I have reason to be happy.  Look at the God side of things.

Jonah 2:9 But I, with a song of thanksgiving, will sacrifice to you. What I have vowed I will make good. Salvation comes from the LORD."

I am thankful because I can.  God has saved me.  Saved me from death, life, hell, and the grave.  O death where is thy sting O Grave where is thy victory?  The sting of death is sin and the strength of sin is the law but thanks be to God which gives the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.

1Cor 10:16 Is not the cup of thanksgiving for which we give thanks a participation in the blood of Christ? And is not the bread that we break a participation in the body of Christ?

I am thankful for the blood and body of Christ.

2Cor 9:11 You will be made rich in every way so that you can be generous on every occasion, and through us your generosity will result in thanksgiving to God.

I am thankful to the Lord because He has made us rich.

Phil 4:6 Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.

I am thankful to have someone to pray to that is able.

1Tim 2:1 I urge, then, first of all, that requests, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for everyone—

I am thankful that someone interceded for me and I for them.

1Tim 4:3 They forbid people to marry and order them to abstain from certain foods, which God created to be received with thanksgiving by those who believe and who know the truth. 4 For everything God created is good, and nothing is to be rejected if it is received with thanksgiving,

I am thankful for the Creator who created everything good.  Receive it with Thanksgiving.  Will you receive from the Lord with Thanksgiving
