November 9, 2008am   Are you in the Service?  Joshua 24:14-25
Veteran’s Sunday

by Ron George Jr. at the Fayetteville Baptist Church

On Veteran’s Sunday we remember those who have served our country and have given to us the freedoms we enjoy.  We are free to be who we choose to be.  What choices have you made with the freedom you enjoy?  You are free to decide.
"Success doesn't depend on what happens at the White House, but what happens at your house."   -- Barbara Bush

Scripture Text:  Josh  24 14 “Now fear the Lord and serve him with all faithfulness. Throw away the gods your forefathers worshiped beyond the River and in Egypt, and serve the Lord. 15 But if serving the Lord seems undesirable to you, then choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your forefathers served beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you are living. But as for me and my household, we will serve the Lord.”
16 Then the people answered, “Far be it from us to forsake the Lord to serve other gods! 17 It was the Lord our God himself who brought us and our fathers up out of Egypt, from that land of slavery, and performed those great signs before our eyes. He protected us on our entire journey and among all the nations through which we traveled. 18 And the Lord drove out before us all the nations, including the Amorites, who lived in the land. We too will serve the Lord, because he is our God.”
19 Joshua said to the people, “You are not able to serve the Lord. He is a holy God; he is a jealous God. He will not forgive your rebellion and your sins. 20 If you forsake the Lord and serve foreign gods, he will turn and bring disaster on you and make an end of you, after he has been good to you.”
21 But the people said to Joshua, “No! We will serve the Lord.”
22 Then Joshua said, “You are witnesses against yourselves that you have chosen to serve the Lord.”
“Yes, we are witnesses,” they replied.
23 “Now then,” said Joshua, “throw away the foreign gods that are among you and yield your hearts to the Lord, the God of Israel.”
24 And the people said to Joshua, “We will serve the Lord our God and obey him.”
25 On that day Joshua made a covenant for the people, and there at Shechem he drew up for them decrees and laws. 26 And Joshua recorded these things in the Book of the Law of God. Then he took a large stone and set it up there under the oak near the holy place of the Lord.

Are you in the service of the true and living God?

1.  The service of the true and living God…  Who is the true and living God?  Can you remember what He has done and who He is?  In V. 1-13 Joshua reminds the people of who he is talking.

2.  Some serve false and dead gods.  Who are these today?  These are the gods of self service, gods of materialism, gods of pride, gods of our forefathers!!!  These are those which pull you away from the true and living God.

3.  God has chosen you.  Have you chosen Him?  Don’t dodge the draft.  This is selective service.  God has chosen you.  He came for you.  He died for you.

4.  What are your choices?  Serve the Lord and live in freedom or serve the gods of the world and die in slavery.

5.  We can’t serve God and the gods of the world, because the living God is a jealous God.  We can’t serve two, but only one.

6.  If you say yes, then do it.  Get rid of those false and dead gods.  Serve the true and living God.  Sign up today with the Lord.  Join the church and serve Him with us.

7.  Joshua said, as for me and my house we will serve the Lord.  The people said we will serve the true and living God and obey Him.  Have you made your choice?  We vote with our lives.  By coming here today you have chosen an action that shows who you serve.  Each and every day we choose who we will serve.

What can we do?
1.  Be the first  I can remember growing up that Dad was the first to go out on Sun. morning and put the chains on the 2 wheel drive truck so that we could plow our way through the snow to go to church.

2.  Take the lead.  Joshua stepped out and became the leader.

  1. Bring your others with you. Ruth 1:16 But Ruth replied, “Don’t ask me to leave you and turn back. I will go wherever you go and live wherever you live. Your people will be my people, and your God will be my God. 17I will die where you die and will be buried there. May the Lord punish me severely if I allow anything but death to separate us!”  Josh. 24:15  …”But as for me and my family we will server the Lord.”

By speaking up for yourself, for your family, your church

By choosing for yourself to throw away the gods of the world in which we live,  the materialism, the greed, the self-centered life,

By serving the Lord yourself and leading them to do the same.

Choose for yourself and your family today… God has given to you and to me the privilege of serving Him and our families.  Who do you serve today?  Who will you serve?  Will you join the service of the true and living God?
