June 22, 2008am  God and the Single Mother.  Genesis 21:8-21

Fayetteville Baptist Church is a faith building community that is Seeking to Serve, Living to Give, and Building on Christ.  How can we seek to serve, live to give, and build on Christ?

1.  God has a passion.  What does God care about?  It all starts with God’s care for you.  No matter who you are or where you are God cares for you.  Luke 19:10 says Jesus came to seek and to save that which was lost.  Jesus Christ is the same today, yesterday, and forever.  He still cares before we can build on Christ we must realize that God cares for you.  He even cares for the outcasts of society.  He cares for the lost, the lonely, and the least.  To begin to build on Christ we must realize that He does care for you.

Genesis 21:8 The child grew and was weaned, and on the day Isaac was weaned Abraham held a great feast. 9 But Sarah saw that the son whom Hagar the Egyptian had borne to Abraham was mocking, 10 and she said to Abraham, “Get rid of that slave woman and her son, for that slave woman’s son will never share in the inheritance with my son Isaac.”
11 The matter distressed Abraham greatly because it concerned his son. 12 But God said to him, “Do not be so distressed about the boy and your maidservant. Listen to whatever Sarah tells you, because it is through Isaac that your offspringa will be reckoned. 13 I will make the son of the maidservant into a nation also, because he is your offspring.”
14 Early the next morning Abraham took some food and a skin of water and gave them to Hagar. He set them on her shoulders and then sent her off with the boy. She went on her way and wandered in the desert of Beersheba.
15 When the water in the skin was gone, she put the boy under one of the bushes. 16 Then she went off and sat down nearby, about a bowshot away, for she thought, “I cannot watch the boy die.” And as she sat there nearby, sheb began to sob.
17 God heard the boy crying, and the angel of God called to Hagar from heaven and said to her, “What is the matter, Hagar? Do not be afraid; God has heard the boy crying as he lies there. 18 Lift the boy up and take him by the hand, for I will make him into a great nation.”
19 Then God opened her eyes and she saw a well of water. So she went and filled the skin with water and gave the boy a drink.
20 God was with the boy as he grew up. He lived in the desert and became an archer. 21 While he was living in the Desert of Paran, his mother got a wife for him from Egypt.

2.  God has a plan.  Go with God.  Wait on the Lord.  We try to work out our problems on our own.  It was better for Hagar and her son to leave Abraham and Sarah’s tent to establish her own.  Her son would grow and live.  He would prosper and become a great nation.  To build on Christ we must seek His plan for our lives and trust Him.

3.  God has a promise.  We must turn to God and trust Him.   Hagar was an out cast and a single mother.   She was destined to die.  Her plight was to God’s glory.  She went out and did the best she could with what she had but that wasn’t enough.  She and her son were going to die.  But remember His promise to Abraham.  God said to Abraham to let her go.  So, she went.  She went on the promise of God.  To build on Christ we must hear God’s plan for your life and believe Him.

4.  God has a person.  Who is that person?  It is you.  No matter your plight in your life.  God calls out a name, and He calls out your name.  What is the matter?  Aren’t you trusting God?  It is all right if you are single.  One is a whole number.  Do you have God, the one true living God?  There are many cheap substitutes out there.  There is only one real thing.  It is Him.  To build on Christ God needs a person who will believe Him, trust Him, and wait for Him.  Are you that person?  Will you believe Him, trust Him, and wait for Him?

5.  God has a provision.  She took what the Lord provided and she and her son were given life. Get up and take your child.  Lead him to God.  God will bless him and you.  Get up and trust God.  Get up and look at what God is doing on your behalf.  God opened her eyes and she saw the well of water.  She was allowed to find the source of her help.  God gives life from the living water.  Jesus is the water of life.  To build on Christ we must take God’s provision.  Whatever He gives is exactly what we need.  Trust Him today and begin to build on Christ.  He cares for you.
