6/7/99 The Journey of a Lifetime Genesis 12

by Ronald E. George Jr.

Are you ready for the journey of a lifetime? The only living God invites you and me to the journey of a lifetime. This journey begins the day that we decide to go with him throughout our lives and continues with him into all eternity.

Scripture Text:   Genesis 12:1 Now the LORD had said unto Abram, Get thee out of thy country, and from thy kindred, and from thy father's house, unto a land that I will shew thee: 2 And I will make of thee a great nation, and I will bless thee, and make thy name great; and thou shalt be a blessing: 3 And I will bless them that bless thee, and curse him that curseth thee: and in thee shall all families of the earth be blessed. 4 So Abram departed, as the LORD had spoken unto him; and Lot went with him: and Abram [was] seventy and five years old when he departed out of Haran. 5 And Abram took Sarai his wife, and Lot his brother's son, and all their substance that they had gathered, and the souls that they had gotten in Haran; and they went forth to go into the land of Canaan; and into the land of Canaan they came. 6 And Abram passed through the land unto the place of Sichem, unto the plain of Moreh. And the Canaanite [was] then in the land. 7 And the LORD appeared unto Abram, and said, Unto thy seed will I give this land: and there builded he an altar unto the LORD, who appeared unto him. 8 And he removed from thence unto a mountain on the east of Bethel, and pitched his tent, [having] Bethel on the west, and Hai on the east: and there he builded an altar unto the LORD, and called upon the name of the LORD. 9 And Abram journeyed, going on still toward the south.

Turn Right - Begins with a call--message, a word to you from God. 1 Now the LORD had said unto Abram, Get thee out of thy country…. 4 So Abram departed, as the LORD had spoken unto him He calls you where you are to tell you where He wants you to be. On the road to Heaven--begins now in His presence and continues on and on--with no end in sight. He calls to you in different ways, in Jesus, in the Word (Bible), the message, the lesson, Creation. It is His revelation. This involves your decision to turn to Him, to go with Him throughout your lifetime, realizing that life has no end. This is for all eternity. How have you decided? You are at the intersection of your life. Don't miss the exit. There may be no turning back. Where does He want you to be? The place of blessing, not completely without tribulation, but full of the presence of God. Otherwise, we quench His presence and power in our lives. We quench Him or shut Him out.

Step on the Gas - Go when He calls.

and Abram [was] seventy and five years old when he departed out of Haran.

Many have hardened their hearts and have quenched His word and call. He will call you where you are. No matter what we think, He will call at age 7 or 75. Now is the time of salvation--voluntarily joining ourselves to God for now and all eternity. God called Abraham to go when he was 75. How old are you? God is calling today for you to go. Are you ready to step on the gas and say yes to the Holy Spirit who is calling you to go with him? What holds you back? Come to him while you can. Is it time for you to preach, be baptized, join this church, or make a public profession of your faith in the only living God.

Pack Carefully- (Don't forget to take your stuff.) Pack before you go.

5 And Abram took Sarai his wife, and Lot his brother's son, and all their substance that they had gathered, and the souls that they had gotten in Haran; and they went forth to go into the land of Canaan…

Take your friends, family, and neighbors with you. God wants all you have and all you are. Give all that you have and all that you are to God. Don't leave anything out. What did you forget to give God on your journey? Give all you have to the Lord and receive it back from him multiplied by his power.

Mark 10:29 "I tell you the truth," Jesus replied, "no one who has left home or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or fields for me and the gospel 30 will fail to receive a hundred times as much in this present age (homes, brothers, sisters, mothers, children and fields--and with them, persecutions) and in the age to come, eternal life.

Don't Worry - Cast all your care on Him who cares for you. And the Canaanite [was] then in the land.

1Pet 5:7 Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you.

Don't let the Canaanites, potholes, bears, etc., stop you from going with Him to this land of blessing. This is the place where you find what you are looking for, fulfillment in your soul. You have become what God created you to be. To go any other way is to miss the journey of a lifetime. Like David, don't fear the giant. Like Daniel, don't fear the lion. Don't fear the reaper of souls, death. Don't fear those who will try to stop you. Just GO with God.

Stop at the Rest Area to Worship - Smell the flowers and listen to the locusts. Enjoy all that He has given you in this life.

8 And he removed from thence unto a mountain on the east of Bethel, and pitched his tent, [having] Bethel on the west, and Hai on the east: and there he builded an altar unto the LORD, and called upon the name of the LORD.

Don't get in too big a hurry and miss the best things in life. Rest in the Lord by trusting Him with your life. Give yourself to Him in worship. Have fun in the Lord and in the Lord's way. Come to church and fellowship with the God who lives in His people. Come to church for strength and to worship Him.

Get Back "on the Road Again" - He continues to lead and guide you. Don't forget to get back on the road with the Lord.

9 And Abram journeyed, going on still toward the south.

Your destination is the land of blessing. Your life with God is a continual journey from one day to the next. Begin it with God today. Have you taken a detour from the right road? Maybe it's time today to get back on track. Get your map (the Bible) out and check the way. Are you going the right way? Are you doing the right thing? Are you standing for the right thing as a follower of the Jesus who died for the truth? Jesus said I am the way, the truth and the life. John 14:6 (KJS) Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.

Will you get back on the road again with the Lord?
