January 16, 2005pm   Release the Lions(deacon ordination)  Acts 6:1-7

By Ronald E. George Jr. at the Grasslick Baptist Church for Dale Mason

The church is a caged lion that cannot become what it was created to be, unless...  In mournful song we long to be released in the world to roam and rule.  We go with God and rule with love, submission, humility, and wisdom.  We go to seek and to save the lost.  Donít allow the Lion of the Lord, or the church to be caged.

Scripture Text:  Acts 6:1  And in those days, when the number of the disciples was multiplied, there arose a murmuring of the Grecians against the Hebrews, because their widows were neglected in the daily ministration. 2 Then the twelve called the multitude of the disciples [unto them], and said, It is not reason that we should leave the word of God, and serve tables. 3 Wherefore, brethren, look ye out among you seven men of honest report, full of the Holy Ghost and wisdom, whom we may appoint over this business. 4 But we will give ourselves continually to prayer, and to the ministry of the word. 5 And the saying pleased the whole multitude: and they chose Stephen, a man full of faith and of the Holy Ghost, and Philip, and Prochorus, and Nicanor, and Timon, and Parmenas, and Nicolas a proselyte of Antioch: 6 Whom they set before the apostles: and when they had prayed, they laid [their] hands on them. 7 And the word of God increased; and the number of the disciples multiplied in Jerusalem greatly; and a great company of the priests were obedient to the faith.

Is the Church the living body of Christ?  We are the lions.  We are striving to be who God has created us to be.  The lions are living creatures, and so is the church.  It is dynamic in all its ways.  As living creatures our lives should function as a living being.  We should be eating, drinking, reproducing, moving, and being who were created to be.  Are we?

What is the purpose of the church?  The lion is to rule the savannah.  He is the king of the beasts.  There is none that he fears.  He is to take his prey at will and eat to feed himself and his offspring.  God created the great lion to rule.  God has created us to rule with love and humility.  The King of kings gave his life a ransom for many.  Our purpose is to seek and to save the lost.  Cf. Luke 19:10

What holds us back?  The bars of the cage hold back the mighty lion.

Unresolved problems  /  Unforgiveness  /  Conditional love  / Traditions  /  Apathy / Un commitment.   We have never tried that before.  We tried that once and it didnít work.   All talk and no action.

How can we release them?  This is the charge to the church and the deacon.

Go with the Lord.  Go on to be who He wants you to be.  Become who you were created to be.  If the church becomes who God wants us to be, then we are fulfilling our calling.  This deacon is fulfilling his calling to become a servant to the Lord and to others.  The original deacons were called so because they stirred up the dust in doing their work.  The church is charged to call, to commission(ordain), and to support these who answer.

Be humble.  /   Be patient.  /  Be loving.  /  Be forgiving.  /  Be willing to change.  /

Be real.    /  Be daring  /  Be understanding  /  Be wise  /  Be faithful

How can we do these things?  Pray for yourself and for the church.  Go with the Lord.
