God chose to visit Zacharias and Elizabeth with a son. The sonís name was called John. We know him better as John the Baptist. Both Zacharias and Elizabeth were old to have a child but the Lord chose this time to visit them with a blessing. After the son was born Zacharias celebrated with the following song or sermon.
This is Zachariasí song:
Scripture Text: Luke 1:67 (KJS) And his father Zacharias was filled with the Holy Ghost, and prophesied, saying, 68 Blessed [be] the Lord God of Israel; for he hath visited and redeemed his people, 69 And hath raised up an horn of salvation for us in the house of his servant David; 70 As he spake by the mouth of his holy prophets, which have been since the world began: 71 That we should be saved from our enemies, and from the hand of all that hate us; 72 To perform the mercy [promised] to our fathers, and to remember his holy covenant; 73 The oath which he sware to our father Abraham,
74 That he would grant unto us, that we being delivered out of the hand of our enemies might serve him without fear, 75 In holiness and righteousness before him, all the days of our life. 76 And thou, child, shalt be called the prophet of the Highest: for thou shalt go before the face of the Lord to prepare his ways; 77 To give knowledge of salvation unto his people by the remission of their sins, 78 Through the tender mercy of our God; whereby the dayspring from on high hath visited us, 79 To give light to them that sit in darkness and [in] the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the way of peace. 80 And the child grew, and waxed strong in spirit, and was in the deserts till the day of his shewing unto Israel.
I. When God Came He gave them a son. God is the author of life, and he wants to give you life through His Son Jesus. God gave them life when the devil through the snake gave them death. Through the second Adam, Jesus they would know God and his eternal life. God has visited his people and redeemed them. He has paid the price for their sin so no longer are they in bondage to sin which brings death. He set them free to live with Him forever.
The elements on the communion table represent the Son of God who was given to us. He has come to us and for us. This is his advent. He has come to us. Why would he come to us? Because he loves us. This is his love shown to us.
II. When God Came Zach and Elizabeth received Him: Zach couldnít speak as a sign of the Lordís touch on his life. He couldnít speak as a sign of Godís promise to him and to his wife. Zacharias was filled with the Holy Ghost. Does He still visit us as he did then? Have we received Him when he visited us?
What kind of reception have you given the Lord? Have you told him to come on in? Have you pretended that he wasnít there knocking at your heart? Have you put him on hold? Have you invited him in and treated him unkindly and ignored him? Let him come in and follow him and you will never go wrong. God set the table and said come and dine. They chose to set at the table with the Lord and form a relationship that would last forever. The table is set today for you and the Lord says come and dine.
III. When God Came they gave Him to others: If there is room at the table for you, then is there room for your friends, family, and neighbors? Zach began to prophesy. Zach blessed the Lord. Zach made the Lord happy.
- They shared their God with those who were there
- They shared their lives with those who they knew.
- They shared their son with those who lived in darkness.
- They shared their message:
Zach told others: what was his message?
The Lord has come to visit and he has redeemed his people.
The Lord has raised up a horn of salvation. The Lord is strong enough to provide salvation for his people. He is able to conquer our enemies of death, disaster, and disease. He is able to save you if you will believe and receive him into your life.
The Lord is fulfilling the prophecy of his prophets. That we will be saved from our enemies, and being delivered by his hand we will serve God without fear in holiness and righteousness all the days of our lives. The Lord will do what he says if we will believe and follow then we will know his blessings.
The Lord is giving Zach a son who is going to be a prophet of the highest.
This prophet will go before God and make a way for Him to travel. Will we?
This prophet will give knowledge of salvation unto his people by the remissions of their sins through the tender mercy of God. Will we?
How do we know? The dayspring has visited us. He has come to give light to them that sit in darkness and in the shadow of death. He has come to guide our feet into the way of peace.
This prophet will prepare the way of the Lord.
