January 16, 2000                        A 21st Century Disciple                           Luke 9

By Ronald E. George Jr. at the Fayetteville Baptist Church

Lord, I will follow thee whithersoever thou goest. Do you wanna be a disciple?

Scripture Text: Luke 9:57 (KJS) And it came to pass, that, as they went in the way, a certain [man] said unto him, Lord, I will follow thee whithersoever thou goest. 58 And Jesus said unto him, Foxes have holes, and birds of the air [have] nests; but the Son of man hath not where to lay [his] head. 59 And he said unto another, Follow me. But he said, Lord, suffer me first to go and bury my father. 60 Jesus said unto him, Let the dead bury their dead: but go thou and preach the kingdom of God. 61 And another also said, Lord, I will follow thee; but let me first go bid them farewell, which are at home at my house. 62 And Jesus said unto him, No man, having put his hand to the plough, and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God.

Who is a disciple of Jesus? Who are the true disciples?

  1. A disciple declares himself a disciple. He decides he wants to follow. He steps over the line.
  2. A disciple decides to move out. He/she gets started.
  3. A disciple deserts the world for Jesus.
  4. A disciple determines to tell others. Preaches the kingdom and he practices what he preaches.
  5. A disciple lays distractions aside. He plows straight with his eyes on Jesus. Forgetting those things that are behind or beside a disciple plows straight ahead with Jesus.

Will you decide today to become apart of the fellowship of the unashamed. Will you sign on the line and accept the challenge of being a disciple of the King?

Romans 1:16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek. 17 For therein is the righteousness of God revealed from faith to faith: as it is written, The just shall live by faith.

The Ultimate Commitment by Bob Moorehead.

I am part of the "Fellowship of the Unashamed." I have Holy Spirit power. The die has been cast. I've stepped over the line. The decision has been made. I am a disciple of His. I won't look back, slow down, back away, or be still. My past is redeemed, my present makes sense, and my future is secure. I am finished and done with low living, sight walking, small plans, smooth knees, colorless dreams, tame visions, mundane talking, cheap giving, and dwarfed goals! I no longer need preeminence, prosperity, position, promotence, or popularity. I don't have to be right, first, tops, recognized, praised, regarded, or rewarded. I now live by faith, lean on His presence, walk by patience, lift by prayer, and labor by power. My face is set, my gait is fast, my goal is heaven, my road is narrow, my way is rough, my companions few, my guide reliable, and my mission clear. I cannot be bought, compromised, detoured, deluded, lured away, or delayed. I will not flinch in the face of sacrifice, hesitate in the presence of the enemy, negotiate at the table of the enemy, ponder at the pool of popularity, or meander in the maze of mediocrity. I won't give up, shut up, or let up, until I have stayed up, prayed up, paid up, stored up, preached up for the cause of Christ. I am a disciple of Jesus. I must go until I drop, preach till all know, and work that He will have no problem recognizing me. My banner is clear! I am committed to Him.

Will you dare to become an ultimate Disciple and sign on the line…?
